About this exhibition

The late 1800s saw the emergence of the Picture Book. Illustrations were as important as the text and were used to help stimulate the imagination. Some of the early picture books and their stories are still highly popular today. It wasn't onky the art and the stories that became popular, the illustrators also became well known. The names of Beatrix Potter and EH Shepherd are still recognisable linking them with their most famous fictional characters, Peter Rabbit and Winnie-the-Pooh. The exhibition celebrates 100 years of children's illustration - the illustrators, the characters and the art, and includes original works by Beatrix Potter, EH Shepherd, Mabel Lucie Attwell, John Lawrence, Quentin Blake, Maggie Kneen and Cliff Wright.
