About this exhibition

In the early 1970's a new form of home entertainment appeared. For the first time, people could not only watch their televisions, they could interact with them! The home video games console was born.

Pong to Playstation (working title) is a hands-on exhibition charting the history of the computer games console. From the earliest black and white TV-tennis games, through the appearance of the first cartridge based consoles and the rise of the games industry giants, this exhibition offers a nostalgic tour of an industry from its infancy to the multi billion dollar business it is today.

Pong to Playstation (working title) also explores the games, game characters, developers and players that have been so influential in the past 35 years.

With over one hundred artefacts on show there is plenty of opportunity to reminisce, all the gaming greats are there including Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft. Games include Space Invaders, Pacman, Super Mario, Zelda and Tomb Raider.

For the real specialist there is an original first edition Odyssey by Magnavox, complete with all its accessories. Launched in 1972, the Odyssey was the world's first home video game system and the example on display is the oldest example on show.
